Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
The opportunity to secure the rookie card of the man who donated what has become the most recognizable trophy in all of professional sports is one that very infrequently occurs, with this example picturing Frederick Arthur Stanley just the third such card ever to land on our doorstep! From Allen & Ginter's "World Sovereigns" set, it was discovered in a box of cigarettes in 1889, the same year that Lord Stanley witnessed his first official hockey game - at Montreal's Winter Carnival! With minor rather non-detracting light creasing in the lower portion, the card's technical grade is lower than its VG appearance, with paper loss on the back the result of once having been affixed in an album. Contrary to the more-common Stanley ephemera items dating to his time on English soil, this lists him as Governor General of Canada, making it a special piece indeed. Complementing it is a low grade card of Queen Victoria from the same issue. Oh, to own a Lord Stanley rookie card!
