Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

A unique and extremely scarce issue put out by O’Keefe’s Beverages to pay tribute to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1931-32 Stanley Cup championship was a set of 20 coasters, or “blotters” as they were referred to in an original ad, measuring 6” by 6” from their furthest points and difficult to locate in any condition. PSA Population Report figures confirm their scarcity, with just 28 total coasters sent to PSA over the years, with our consignor’s fascinating ensemble featuring 13 “highest-graded-at-PSA” examples. The coasters feature the artwork of prominent Canadian cartoon artist Lou Skuce. ......A back-up goaltender with Toronto starting in 1928-29, Benny Grant got into five games during the Leafs’s Stanley Cup championship season of ’31-32, earning him inclusion in the O’Keefe’s coaster set, although he spent the entire ’32-33 campaign in the minors. Of interest to goalie collectors as well, this coaster has been slabbed PR 1 by PSA, is a Pop-1 and is bettered on the PSA chart by the only other similar example, graded GOOD+ 2.5.
