Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

More ultra-desirable champions here, offered up by the Dominion Chocolate Company of Toronto and by "Simgin", the assembler of these 32 hockey cards which were part of a big 120-card "Dominion Athletic Stars" set, paying tribute to prominent Canadian athletes. "A Sport Champion Picture in Every Bar" is how one newspaper advertisement read back in the day, with the little coupons, or tabs, at the bottom of each card designed to be cut-off, saved and then mailed to the company, with card and chocolate-loving collectors awarded a prize for their efforts. This PSA champion is the only complete 32-card hockey set ever to appear on the PSA Set Registry, (out of only five total entries), and has a delicious GPA of 5.93. The group, with all coupons still present, is bolstered by eight cards featuring Hall-of-Famers and includes legends Georges Vezina, Newsy Lalonde, Aurele Joliat and Lionel Conacher. The Lalonde merited a dazzling mark of MINT 9 and is one of just six cards, (all subjects combined - close to 800 cards submitted to PSA in company history), to earn such lofty status, and one of only two hockey cards deemed MINT 9 by PSA. The challenging Vezina, being the last card numbered in the set, is slabbed EX-MT 6 and is a Pop-1 edged by just one other example. The first cardboard appearance of athlete extraordinaire Lionel Conacher is an EX 5 here, with the Pop-4 also only edged by one other similar card. Joliat checks in at VG 3, while other HOFers are Shorty Green (Pop-1 NM 7 with none higher), Harry Watson (Pop-2 NM 7 with none higher) and Hooley Smith (Pop-2 EX-MT 6 with none higher). Bun Cook shows up in the Soo Greyhounds card, another second-to-none-at-PSA example and joined by one other NM 7 on the PSA Population Report. Among the rest there are nine cards which are either Pop-1 chart-toppers (4) or tied for first place in their respective "slots" (5). Fascinating pieces of Canadiana, these remarkable encapsulated beauties will be the prize awarded to the highest bidder.
