Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

The Montreal Canadiens' "Big Three" of Georges Vezina, Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat had led the Habs to the Stanley Cup the spring prior to appearing on hockey cards found in packs of Champs Cigarettes, and, along with fellow legend King Clancy, lead this astonishing set of encapsulated darlings. The question of Champ's or Champs arises here, since newspaper ads back in the day, along with actual cigarette packs, feature "Champs" with the back of the cards themselves reading "Champ's Cigarettes." In the end though, what's most important is that these precious collectibles are "champs" at PSA! What is striking when consulting the PSA Set Registry and viewing the award-winning composition of the "Simgin" entry, are the amount of zeroes in the "Pop Higher" column. There are an incredible (38) cards which fall into the none-ever-graded-higher-at-PSA realm, including 15 Pop-1s which are thus alone in first place in their respective "lines." Peerless NM-MT 8 examples total eleven and are highlighted by Hap Day's rookie card, as well as cards of Frank Finnigan (RC), John Ross Roach and Mickey Roach, with NM 7 Pop-1 leaders including Sam Rothschild RC and the Stanley Cup card. No higher PSA-slabbed cards exist of Pop-2 NM-MT 8 examples here of King Clancy, Cy Denneny, Sprague Cleghorn and Sylvio Mantha, with the same holding true for Pop-2 NM 7 cards of Billy Burch, Frank Nighbor, Hooley Smith RC and Punch Broadbent - what a Hall of Fame lineup! As for the Vezina, it is a Pop-3 EX-MT 6 with none higher, with the NM 7 Morenz a Pop-1 and edged only by two others. Joliat comes in at NM+ 7.5 and alone in second place. A MINT 9 George Redding rookie card is the only Champs card, (all players combined - approaching one thousand total submissions in PSA history), to ever be awarded a mark of MINT 9! The All-Time only 100% complete 1924-25 Champs set on the PSA Set Registry, an extremely difficult, almost impossible, set to complete in any condition, this sensational and thought-provoking years-in-the-making masterpiece has an extraordinary GPA of 7.25 and is ready to render its new owner extremely proud.
