Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
For those unacquainted with the sport of hockey, when players say they want to kiss Lord Stanley's mug, they don't mean the man with the beard, they mean the trophy that the kindly Lord Stanley donated! Offered is a rarely seen cabinet photo of the man himself, featuring his rare, earlier "Fred Stanley" signature from 1885, one of only a few known signed Stanley photos. This heavy stock cabinet photo, in excellent condition, measures 4 1/2" x 6 1/2", and shows Lord Stanley peering out in serious fashion, with his clear signature signed with great flair using a vintage fountain pen, with the printed caption at the bottom reading "The Rt. Hon. Colonel F Stanley PCMP". This signed photo was originally acquired with a letter which stated "I am honoured by your request, I have signed the photograph, & remain Yours faithfully, Fred Stanley Nov. 9/85". A copy of this letter is included. A truly rare and historic Lord Stanley signed memento. This Lord Stanley cabinet photo was done by Elliot & Fry of London England, which is printed at the bottom of the photo. On the back is printed "Elliot and Fry Photographers 55 &56 Baker Street, London", while handwritten in pencil is "Lord Derby 16th Earl 1841-1908 Governor Gen of Canada Won Oaks in 1893 & 1906 Succeeded in 1893".
