Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

Here is what has to be among the very first, if not the first, of the Spalding's Hockey guides, published early in the CAHL's (Canadian Amateur Hockey League) 1901 season. There are limited records from this era, but the earliest known Canadian book on hockey (according to a McMaster University study) was "Hockey: Canada's Royal Winter Game", written by Arthur Farrell and published in 1899. This guide, also compiled by Farrell, who was a player with the Stanley Cup winning Montreal Shamrock teams in 1899 & 1900, is a fascinating window into the sport at the very start of the 20th Century. Its 90 pages include photos of the Shamrocks, the Montreal Victorias and the Winnipeg Victorias, who between them had captured the first eight Stanley Cup championships won to that point; along with articles, rules, records and more photos. Obviously incredibly rare, this 112 year old guide remains solidly bound with clean and off-white inside pages - about VG/EX, with minor professional restoration. A Hall of Fame worthy item to be sure.
