This awesome Wayne Gretzky early-1980s Edmonton Oilers Jofa game-worn helmet sat atop the Great One's golden locks as he assaulted the NHL record book at the outset of his legendary career. This historic circa 1981-1983 Gretzky game-worn helmet comes with two letters of authenticity, including one from renowned Gretzky/Oilers memorabilia expert Shawn Chaulk. The wear on the Oilers logo and number "99" decals on Gretz's white Jofa lid attest to its duty during Edmonton's home games at the Northlands Coliseum. The helmet is the correct model and size with the proper interior padding style and colour, with "99" written on it in light blue marker, and the correct stickers and sticker placement for that era. The chin strap is set to almost its longest length. Round blue and yellow Svenska sticker sits on the left temple while the Jofa stickers on both sides were scratched off either by a tool or fingernails. Black marks on the right front and top and the back of the left side appear to be from black bulldog stick tape. An incredible opportunity to obtain a premium Gretzky game-worn helmet. While Chaulk says the "99" written in light blue marker inside the helmet is not present in any of his other helmets, the blue marker used was a very common colour and thickness used in the Oilers dressing room in the early ‘80s for autographs and he has observed many items autographed with the same light blue marker, in the same thickness of tip from that era. Chaulk also notes that the font is the same as is present on many of his game-used sticks, which he says may imply that the team trainer who prepared Wayne's sticks also marked his helmet with the same font / style of "99".
