Even though Eddie Shore had made it to the bigs and was poised for stardom, he still had to pay taxes like the rest of us, and these two fascinating papers from his rookie campaign breaks it all down for us, first outlining his earnings and monthly expenses for the 1926-27 and '27-'28 season, typed on an 8 1/2" x 11" paper, and then Shore's original Form 1040 B income tax copy, measuring 10 1/2" x 16", detailing the tax computation for the 1927 calendar year in which the rushing and often nasty defenseman earned a whopping $4036.73. It's a great look into the finances of a player in the early years, with both papers showing wonderful condition with normal aging and folds. Facinating indeed. Shore outlines his his partial earning from the 1926-27 and '27-'28 seasons, a total of $5138.33 before expenses, plus his $1000 bonus, and we see that he paid $60 a month rent and claimed $4 a day for meals. The Form 1040 B breaks it all down, compliments of the Internal Revenue in Washington DC. Remarkable personal finance documents from the legendary defenseman.
