A member of the 1998 Olympic gold medal champions, NHL forward Josef Beranek had this Team Czech Republic jersey ready for his use at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Beranek, who played 531 games from 1991-2001 with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Vancouver and Pittsburgh, played all of the Czechs’ three round-robin games at the inaugural World Cup of Hockey. This #42 game-issued jersey with size 56 tagging is from a set of the team’s red jerseys that did not see active duty.
Team Czech Republic – 1996 World Cup of Hockey
The Czech Republic had a shockingly rough time at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Despite a lineup that boasted Jaromir Jagr and many of the other elements that would go into winning Olympic gold less than two years later in Nagano, the Czechs could not overcome the absence of all-universe goalie Dominik Hasek from the inaugural edition of the elite international hockey competition.
Playing in the European pool, the Czechs dropped their opener to Finland in Helsinki and then were shut out by Sweden at home in Prague. Disaster struck when they were eliminated by a loss in Germany, leaving a lineup led by Jagr and boasting NHL stars such as Roman Hamrlik, Robert Lang, Stan Neckar, Petr Nedved, Robert Reichel, Martin Rucinsky, Jiri Slegr, Martin Straka, Petr Sykora and Roman Turek to wonder what went wrong.
Offered here is a set of red Czech Republic game-issued jerseys by Bauer from the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Each of these classic international hockey jerseys has Bauer Pro Wear and size flag tags sewn in the neck and a Nike inventory barcode heat-screened into the inner rear tail. The Bauer logo patch is sewn on the right breast and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey patch sits on the left shoulder. Sublimated graphics include the Czech Republic national crest on the front and national flag graphics on the front and rear tails. The numbers on the sleeves and back, and surname letters on a nameplate stitched on the back are all sewn on in tackle twill. Each jersey will come complete with a letter of authenticity from the NHLPA.
