Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/1/2011
On the evening of Sunday, March 12th, 1961, a mild, sunny day in Geneva, Switzerland, at about 8:30 pm, the final buzzer sounded in the beautiful arena. The scoreboard read: Canada 5 - Russia 1. The Trail Smoke Eaters had won the World Ice Hockey Championships! Canada would not repeat the achievement until decades later in 1994. Wonderful red wool sweater was worn by Jack McLeod as a member of Team Canada during the 1961 World Hockey Championships. McLeod had earlier been part of the Trail Smoke Eaters team that won the 1960 Allan Cup championship, earning the right to represent Canada at the 1961 Worlds. Designed in red with blue and white accents and striping, the uniform sports the blue and white maple leaf logo across the chest with "Canada" arching above in single-layer white tackle twill letters. More tackle twill cresting at the left shoulder holds the embroidered "Trail" town designation and the opposite arm is decorated with a single-layer number "16" which is also repeated on the back in larger numerals. Ancient tie-neck style still retains the original string! Obviously well-washed and worn, the sweater is free of any damage or holes that we have come to expect from wools of the period. This one has been well-preserved and is in pristine condition! The lot also comes with a signed photograph of McLeod on the ice wearing the jersey in Geneva. A scarce and important relic of a great moment in Canadian hockey history!
