Perfect plum goalie mask with gold and white crowns at each temple worn by Los Angeles Kings netminder Rogatien Vachon circa 1976 to 1978. Vachon was traded to the Kings in 1971 where he achieved his greatest individual success. He was named to the NHL's second All-Star team in 1975 and 1977 and his number 30 was the first number retired by the Kings in a ceremony on February 14, 1985. These painted 1970s-style fiberglass creations are highly prized by mask and game-worn collectors and when a well-known example comes to market, the buzz builds and reaches a fever-pitch. This one should create a stir! This vintage mask, built by famed mask-maker Ernie Higgins, is coated in a thick layer of purple paint and shows loads of game wear with dozens of paint chips and puck marks. A few small damaged areas appear where the fiberglass has cracked slightly below the left eye and again up at the top on the left side. The interior padding is original and well-aged and the mask still has the vintage straps attached at five points. Rogie has added a fine silver paint pen signature down on the chin and he included his player number "30" below. We have conclusively photo-matched the facemask to at least twenty different shots including action images from the 1977 Stanley Cup Playoffs. A CD compilation of the digital images will be included with the lot. Spectacular find! From the personal collection of Rogatien Vachon, complete with his signed letter of authenticity. Please note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
