Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Hockey historians and vintage publication collectors will find plenty of delights in this lot of two original hockey guides, the Spalding's Athletic Library Official Ice Hockey Guides for both 1911 and 1914. The 1911 Spalding guide features an account of the Montreal Wanderers' 1910 Stanley Cup win and superb pictures of team members such as the Cleghorn brothers and Smeaton, as well as photos of American amateur teams, including the Ivy League squads from Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth and Columbia. The 1914 guide features Frank Calder's account of "Hockey in Canada, 1913" and includes a great shot of the Toronto Arena's full ice surface and a team photo of the Montreal Canadiens in their barber-pole uniforms. The mostly complete covers of both guides are detached from the spine and held together by vintage adhesive tape. Loaded with articles on ice hockey, the rules of the game and pages upon pages of ads and catalog illustrations of Spalding's lineup of sporting goods for hockey and other sporting activities. Both of these early 20th century Spalding hockey guides have been preserved in very good condition - despite their detached covers - and each guide is complete.
