Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
A pair of Gilles Meloche's 1970s gamers are featured in this lot of three vintage game-used goalie sticks. Stuck behind Tony Esposito as a Chicago Black Hawks prospect, Meloche was dealt to the woeful California Golden Seals following the 1970-71 season. He moved on to Cleveland when the Seals relocated for the 1976-77 season, then ended up with Minnesota two years later after the failed Barons merged with the struggling North Stars. After taking part in two All-Star games in the early 1980s, Meloche wound up his career with Pittsburgh, where he spent his final three seasons as a teammate of the young Mario Lemieux. Meloche's 351 career losses mean that he was good enough on a score of bad teams to enjoy an 18-year NHL career. "Meloche" is stamped on the front of the shaft of his Northland gamer, which has a huge crack at the top edge of the heel. Several strands of his original black bulldog tape job remain on the blade towards the toe while the rest of his tape job on the blade was removed. His distinctive white tape job on the top of the paddle and massive white tape knob are intact on both of his gamers, including his Sher-Wood with "Meloche G" stamped on the shaft. Meloche's Sher-Wood retains his distinctive tape job on the blade which features black bulldog tape from the lower part of the paddle all the way to the tip of the toe. Plenty of game wear to report on all three sticks, including the Canadien gamer from an unidentified goalie with "1" written in red marker on the front of the shaft below its huge white tape knob/handle.
