Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Stirring portrait of baseball immortal Tyrus Raymond "Ty" Cobb is from the most popular of all tobacco baseball issues, the coveted T206 set, issued from 1909 to 1911. The "Piedmont" back here mentions the "350 Subjects" available, with the cards offered in 16 different brands of cigarettes. One of the original five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, Cobb was the all-time hit leader until Pete Rose came along and his .367 career batting average is the highest ever. Cobb's father was against his son playing ball, fearing it would turn him into a "ruffian"! Gorgeous card has received EX 5 status from PSA, with raw EX-MT examples booking in the $2,000 neighborhood.
