Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

A unique and very scarce/desirable issue are these coasters which pay tribute to the 1931-32 Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs and which were available from O'Keefe's Beverages Limited. With the texture of a blotter and indeed referred to as blotters by some, the sensational sketches included are the work of cartoon artist Lou Skuce and feature a splendid Hall of Fame lineup. The coasters display better than their technical (low) grade, with paper loss to both the fronts and backs but limited mostly to peripheral areas and not affecting the images or text. All also have a paper clip mark/stain near the top. Among the nicer ones comparatively are Kid Line linemates Charlie Conacher, Joe Primeau and Busher Jackson, along with #s 3-Alex Levinsky, 6-Ace Bailey, 8-Harold Cotton, 12-Frank Finnigan, 14-Bob Gracie, 16-Harold Darragh and 17-Benny Grant. Meanwhile, 1-Lorne Chabot, 2-Red Horner, 4-Hap Day and 5-Andy Blair have visible scotch tape stains, with a piece missing from the Day. King Clancy (#7) is torn over on the left side, but again, all text is legible and like the others, informative and entertaining. The "O'Keefe's Big 4" on the backs is the name of the soft drink with which the coasters were available. They measure 5-1/4" from tip to tip and rarely turn up in such quantity. Cheers!
