Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Delectable and captivating offering here features Didier Pitre, the idol of French-Canadian hockey followers of the era and the very first player signed by Jack Laviolette when the latter assembled the very first Montreal Canadiens team in 1909! The two had played together in the International Pro League then on defence for the Montreal Shamrocks before the founding of the Canadiens. They later moved up to forward with right winger Pitre’s speed and shot accounting for 30 goals in 1914-15. He formed a line with Laviolette and Newsy Lalonde the following season and led the NHA in scoring, before helping the Canadiens to their first of 24 Stanley Cups. It’s inspiring to look at the Hall-of-Famer, pictured here on card #41 of the famous and coveted Sweet Caporal postcard set of 1910-11. This example has been graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, with the company only having graded one other Pitre postcard higher.
