Rod Gilbert became the first player to have his jersey number retired by the New York Rangers when his #7 was hoisted to the Madison Square Garden rafters on October 14, 1979. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, Rod was a mainstay on the fabled GAG (goal-a-game) line with 50-goal scorer Vic Hadfield and fellow HOFer Jean Ratelle. Gilbert, who starred with the Blueshirts for 18 seasons, still holds all of the Rangers' career scoring records with 406 goals, 615 assists and 1,021 points. One of the Big Apple's most popular athletes of his day, Rod wore this blue Rangers gamer during the early 1970s. This tie-down neck jersey with an alternate captain's "A" sewn on the left breast has been authenticated by MeiGray Vintage. Team repairs are located on the right sleeve and front of the jersey of this Gilbert #7 gamer. A fight strap was added when the jersey was recycled by the Rangers for use in practice, a common occurrence during that era, and many more sewing repairs can be attributed to its second life. The Gerry Cosby tagging is missing from this size 46 jersey. Rod has placed a silver paint pen signature on the left side of the jersey. A CD with a dozen photos of Gilbert wearing this style of jersey will accompany this Blueshirts treasure worn by one of the most popular Rangers ever to skate his way down Broadway.
