Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

Hockey legends Art Ross and Lester Patrick are front and center in this incredible 1908 Rice Studios photo montage of the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Wanderers. Cecil Blachford and Hod Stuart are also pictured in the middle of this vintage Wanderers framed studio print with the team's hardware laid out above them, including the original Stanley Cup. The montage is a tribute to the team's Cup wins in 1906, 1907 and 1908 in an era when the champions were subject to challenges to defend their title. Led by the scoring heroics of Patrick, Ernie Russell and Frank Glass, the Wanderers won a two-game, total-goals series against Ottawa in March 1906 to claim the Cup. After defending their title at the end of the year against New Glasgow, the team lost the Cup to Kenora in January 1907 before exacting revenge against the same team two months later to reclaim the prize. The Wanderers defended Stanley Cup challenges by Ottawa, Winnipeg and Toronto in 1908 to retain possession for a third straight season. Portraits of Strachan, Glass, Hern, Stuart and Kennedy adorn the left side of the montage, with photos of Smaill, Johnston, Strachan, Marshall, Russell and Liffiton on the right side. The 15" x 19" original print remains in excellent condition as presented recessed on grey two-level grey matte mounted in a 23" x 27" wood frame. A rare opportunity to acquire an early century team photo of this great team.
