After a somewhat disappointing loss to Toronto the previous year during Canada's centennial year, the Montreal Canadiens rebounded the following season to recapture the Stanley Cup for the 3rd time in 4 years. In the first year of expansion, Jean Beliveau led the team with 68 points and the Canadiens finished atop the new East Division. In the playoffs, Montreal swept past Boston, took care of Chicago in 5 games and then had no problem with St. Louis in the finals, registering another 4-game sweep. Jean-Claude Tremblay had the distinction of scoring the Cup-winning goal, midway through the 3rd period of the Habs' 3-2 clinching victory. Rogie Vachon, the Habs' rookie netminder, was called upon for just under half of the team's regular season games and also saw action in two post season tilts. This wondrous souvenir representing Rogie Vachon's first Stanley Cup victory includes the names of the champions engraved on the trophy's barrel. Among them is that of Toe Blake, who retired after this season with a coaching-record of 8 Stanley Cup titles. The trophy has gathered a nice golden patina over the years but does show areas of tarnish and loss of finish, especially on the backside. From the personal collection of Rogatien Vachon, complete with his signed letter of authenticity.
