Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
Interesting letter, written entirely in fountain pen ink by Toronto Maple Leafs owner and hockey Hall of Fame member Harold Ballard while serving a prison sentence in 1973. Ballard was tried on 49 counts of fraud, theft and tax evasion involving funds from the Leafs. The letter, on Maple Leaf Gardens stationery, thanks a fan for her earlier letter of support and encourages her to write on his behalf to "the Solicitor General, the Honourable W. Allmand" with her concerns regarding his incarceration. Ballard goes on to claim that he is a political prisoner and says the politicians in Ottawa are scared of the news media. Signed at the bottom "Sincerely, Harold E, Ballard". As the pen was running out of ink, Ballard appears to have traced over his first name with a darker stroke. In excellent condition with folds. Also includes the original mailing envelope.
