Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
Known in hockey annals as the first great American-born hockey star, Hockey Hall-of-Famer Hobey Baker was an all-round athlete who also excelled in football, performing legendary feats while leading the Princeton Tigers against "Big Three" rivals Harvard and Yale. In 1912, Baker, who played halfback and was a sensational kick returner, scored 92 points, an individual Princeton record for more than 60 years. This 56-page program was published for Princeton's game at Harvard (played November 2, 1912), with the image of the packed Harvard Stadium on the cover giving an indication of how big-time Big Three football was. In fact, high society was attracted and newspapers reported the games as national events. A nice big (2 1/2" x 3") ticket stub is pasted to the inside cover here, while Baker is pictured individually and in a team photo and is listed on the lineup page. Page one is torn and the cover of the 7" by 11" program has become detached, but the trip back in time is truly fascinating.
