Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010

This amazing find is a rare colourized Rice Studios team photo of the 1933-34 Montreal Canadiens, beautifully presented along with a backing page featuring the autographs of Howie Morenz, Aurèle Joliat, Newsy Lalonde, Lorne Chabot and the rest of the team. Joliat led the Habs with 37 points in 48 games in the final season of Morenz's first stellar stint with the Canadiens, who finished second in the Canadian Division with a 22-20-6 mark for 50 points, 11 behind Toronto. Morenz's signature appears on the left side of the bottom row of signatures on this yellowed piece of paper backing that was originally displayed on the back of this remarkable 9"x 13" Rice print. This magnificent and scarce Canadiens team photo was clearly and painstakingly hand coloured by the Montreal photo studio. Morenz and Joliat flank Chabot in the middle of the front row. Coach Lalonde stands at the right end of the back row. Pit Lepine and Marty Burke signed beside Morenz. The line above is headed "front row" and was signed by Steve Davis, Johnny Gagnon, Joliat and Chabot. "November 1933-34" is written on the top line of autograph sheet, which has torn edges and some surface damage, though the Morenz, Joliat, Chabot and Lalonde autographs are not compromised. The first line on the page reads "Back row" and it has damaged signatures of Jules Dugal, Paul-Marcel Raymond, along with Léo Bourgault and Gerald Carson, with the signatures of Jack Riley, Armand Mondou, Wildor Larochelle and Georges Mantha on the next line down, with Lalonde's signature beneath Mantha's. The two items are stylishly displayed in a burgundy matte, with the autograph sheet recessed. The display is nicely mounted in a 31 3/8" x 25 3/8" wood frame.
