Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010

Hall-of-Famer Lanny McDonald’s game-used Koho wood stick dates from the fall of 1979. The “Oct 12 1979” factory date stamp and the number 7 written in blue marker above where “McDonald” is stamped on the shaft date this gamer with a broken blade from early in what would prove to be Lanny’s final season in Toronto. Blue embossing tape labels on the back of the shaft read “Lanny McDonald No. 7 Maple Leafs Nov/79” and “Now With Colorado Rockies” after the Maple Leafs shipped him to Denver’s ill-fated first NHL team in a shocking mid-season deal that outraged the Maple Leaf Gardens faithful. Lanny’s white tape handle with a thick butt end knob remains intact. The now-bare blade is detached, cracked through at the heel, though a handyman’s touch could be applied to make it whole again. Koho tape bands are no longer on the shaft and the middle of the O’s in the company name have been filled in with black marker.
