The Olympic Games came to Canada in 1976 when the city of Montreal played host to the Games of the XXI Olympiad. Great Canadian athletes were involved in the buildup to the games and Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau played his part as he and his wife Elise represented their country during the transfer of the sacred Olympic flame from its homeland in Greece at the outset of its unique journey to Montreal. Offered here is the original Greek language diploma that was presented to Elise Beliveau commemorating the transfer of the Olympic flame from Athens to Ottawa. It marked the first time that the flame was electronically transmitted via satellite by means of an electronic pulse derived from the actual burning flame. This original diploma featuring the multi-colored Olympic rings in the upper left corner measures roughly 13" x 9" and is signed in blue ballpoint by Otto Szymiczkek, the dean of the International Olympic Academy, whose seal is stamped directly above his signature. Nikolaos Nissiotis (IOA president 1974-1976) and Athanios Tzartzanos (IOA president 1976-1986) have also signed in blue ballpoint on either side of the IOA seal. This unique and historic Olympic diploma comes along with Jean Beliveau's signed letter of authenticity.
