The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
After running his heavyweight record to 22-0-0 with a 15-round decision over George Chuvalo at Maple Leaf Gardens on March 29, 1966, Muhammad Ali said of his opponent, “he’s the toughest guy I ever fought.” High praise indeed. In fact, the Canadian heavyweight was never knocked down – not even once – in 93 professional bouts from 1956 to 1979. This fascinating lot includes three original Chuvalo fight contracts, each with the boxer’s original signature. Chuvalo signed this contract for $4,000 Canadian, plus training and hotel expenses, to fight Joe Bygraves at the Royal Albert Hall in London on December 7, 1965, one month after he lost to Ernie Terrell at Maple Leaf Gardens. Later in the decade, Chuvalo bounced back from a February 1969 loss to Buster Mathis at Madison Square Garden with a second-round knockout of Stanford Harris on September 8 in Lethbridge, Alberta. That began a run of six straight wins, including a knockout win over Jerry Quarry in December at Madison Square Garden followed by another knockout over Willie Tiger in Detroit on May 1, 1970. This lot also includes contracts for the fights against Harris and Tiger and Chuvalo’s 1966-67 membership card from the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre.
