The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
It was in 1909 that Albert George Grey, the fourth Earl and Canada’s
ninth Governor General donated a trophy for the “Amateur Rugby
Championship of Canada.” The trophy would later become popularized as
the Grey Cup and be acknowledged as the symbol of Canadian
professional football supremacy. This hardcover book with the rather
lengthy title “Addresses To His Excellency Earl Grey, G.C.M.G. Etc
Governor General of Canada And His Speeches In Reply, Having Relation
To The Resources And Progress Of The Dominion”, was printed in Ottawa
in 1908. A blank flyleaf in the front of the book holds a wonderful
and vintage penciled personalized inscription “from Grey, 4th August,
1908”. Sensational piece for CFL historians, especially since it was
signed during Grey’s years in Canada.
