The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
This 1924-25 card issued by William Paterson is one of the final original hockey cards produced of Georges Vezina, the great Montreal Canadiens goalie who led the team to its first two Stanley Cups. Very similar to his card in the 1923-24 Paterson set, Vezina's 1924-25 card was No. 43 in Paterson's set of 60 cards. The card is in excellent condition with a very light horizontal crease from the left edge just below halfway up the card. The 1924-25 season was Vezina's last full campaign with the Canadiens and came in the wake of the team's second Cup in 1924. Nicknamed the Chicoutimi Cucumber for his cool demeanor in goal, Vezina was running a fever in the Canadiens' 1925-26 home opener and he collapsed in his crease at the beginning of the second period. Subsequently diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis, he died on March 27, 1926.
