This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
The Americans were the NHL’s first team in New York, debuting in 1925-26, one year before the Rangers. This wonderful original painting by artist Carleton “Mac” McDiarmid presents Mervyn “Red” Dutton in the woeful team’s colorful uniform. Dutton has personally autographed the portrait in black ink and dated it, “Calgary, Alberta, June 25, 1977”. After beginning his career with the Calgary Tigers, he played for the Montreal Maroons before ending his playing days with the Americans. Dutton went on to serve as the NHL’s president from 1943 to 1946. This sensational portrait is beautifully presented in a two-tone grey and white matte and mounted in a 20” x 16” silver frame.
