The 1988 Stanley Cup Final series pitted the Oilers’ offensive juggernaut against the Bruins’ more balanced team. The Oilers showed their defensive prowess, surrendering just 9 goals in the four completed games. Game 4 is well-known for fog that interfered with the game and a power outage that caused its cancellation. This would allow the Oilers to win the Cup at home in the Northlands Coliseum and complete the “sweep” in a rescheduled Game 4. Wayne Gretzky claimed his second Conn Smythe Trophy and set playoff records with 31 assists in just 18 games, and 13 points in the series. The Oilers fourth Stanley Cup Championship remains bittersweet for the fans in Edmonton as it also represents Wayne Gretzky’s final moment in an Oilers uniform. Four substantial cubic zircons, engulfed by numerous smaller stones, are surrounded by the words “1988 Stanley Cup Champions” on the face of this stunning ring. The logo of the Edmonton Oilers is prominently featured on the left shank with “McAvoy” above. The opposing shank proudly lists the team’s Championship seasons engraved onto four raised Cups with the motivational image of the carrot. The interior of this majestic bauble is stamped with the 10K marking from the manufacturer. Elsie McAvoy, mother-in-law to Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington, was presented with this ring to celebrate the team’s Stanley Cup season. An accompanying letter of authenticity, from the Jostens representative in Edmonton who was charged with producing the Oilers rings for all five championships and who has closely examined this ring, details the authenticity of the ring and notes that this example was produced for Mrs. McAvoy and is listed on the original order form and documentation for the Oilers 1988 Stanley Cup rings. In pristine condition, complete with an additional letter of provenance signed by Peter Pocklington.
