This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Bob Bourne won four straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders in the early-1980s and capped his remarkable career by winning the William Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1987-88 as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. Bourne gained significant notoriety when he was named one of eight “Athletes Who Care” by Sports Illustrated, which chose the group as the magazine’s Sportsmen of the Year for 1987. Bourne, whose elder son Jeffrey is afflicted with spina bifida, was singled out for praise as a result of his work with a school for handicapped children. This is the personal trophy that was presented to Bourne by the NHL. The trophy, “Presented by National Hockey League Writers Association for High Example in Perseverance, Sportsmanship, and Dedication to Hockey”, stands about 17” tall from base to the tip of the highest of three flames, which are screwed into three torches. This remarkable lot includes two 10” x 8” photos of Bourne posing with the actual trophy and a letter dated June 14, 1988, on NHL letterhead from Shannon H. Shay, assistant director of information congratulating him on winning the award and thanking him for attending the
Stanley Cup luncheon in Boston. This lot comes along with Bob Bourne’s signed letter of authenticity.
