The New York Islanders switched conferences for the 1981-82 season and continued their dynasty with a third straight Stanley Cup and another conference championship, this time the Prince of Wales. This is the personal Prince of Wales Trophy that the NHL presented to Bob Bourne as a member of the Wales champion Islanders, who won the title as a result of winning the conference’s playoff draw to face the Vancouver Canucks, surprise winners of the Campbell Conference playoffs. The Islanders stopped the Canucks’ dream season in its tracks, sweeping them in four straight to win the Cup at the Pacific Coliseum, the only one of four championships they celebrated on the road. Bourne got this trophy as a result of the Islanders sweep of the Quebec Nordiques in the Wales Conference final. One plaque mounted on the trophy’s 2” high wooden base is engraved “N.H.L. CHAMPIONS NEW YORK ISLANDERS 1981 – 82” and “H.R.H. PRINCE of WALES TROPHY BOB BOURNE” is engraved on a plaque on the other side of the base. The trophy’s removable silver lid is in pristine condition. The wooden base exhibits light wear and there are tiny dents under the crest on the front of the cup and a small tarnish spot on back of cup. This dazzling trophy comes with Bob Bourne’s signed letter of authenticity.
