The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Here is a great collectors’ item from a team that bridged the great Canadiens dynasties of the 1950s and 1960s with the group of young stars that went on to win four straight Cups in the late-1970s. The Montreal Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup under coach Scotty Bowman in 1973, the team’s sixth championship in nine seasons since 1965. Jacques Laperriere was a part of all six teams and this 13” tall trophy is the original that the NHL presented to the great defenceman for the Habs’ 1972-73 championship, his last Cup as a player. Laperriere led the league with a plus 78 in 1972-73, making him the only player to interrupt Bobby Orr’s stranglehold on the plus-minus category between 1969 and 1975. The Canadiens went 52-10-16 during the regular season, finishing first overall with 120 points, before beating Buffalo, Philadelphia and Chicago in the playoffs to win the Cup. Captain Henri Richard won his record 11th Stanley Cup, with Laperriere and Frank Mahovlich also representing the old guard. Guy Lafleur won his first Cup along with Larry Robinson and Steve Shutt. “CLUB DE HOCKEY CANADIEN, 1972-73” is engraved on the trophy produced by renowned silversmith Carl Poul Petersen with the team’s members listed below. Laperriere has signed the green felt on the bottom of the 13” tall trophy’s black wood base. This magnificent trophy comes along with Jacques Laperriere’s signed letter of authenticity.
