The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Jacques Laperriere entered the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens back in the early-Sixties, winning the Calder award as the league’s top rookie in 1964 and the Norris trophy as the best defenceman in 1966. Jacques helped the Habs along to six Stanley Cup Victories in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1973. Laperriere’s excellence received the ultimate validation in 1987 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. This wonderful creamy white wool was worn by Jacques during the early-1960s. The number two appears in two-tone tackle twill on the back and again on each sleeve. Some areas along the top and bottom borders of the back number have come loose but this just adds to the character of the sweater. The bleu, blanc et rouge Habs crest rests on the front and if you look very closely, you may spot three small stitched team repairs to go with a few smaller unrepaired holes and snags. Loads of pilling tells the tale of the game wear on this one with some light staining and very slight dye transfer up near the shoulder yoke. The original string is still in the tie-neck but there are no tags in the collar or hem. Our research shows Jacques wearing number 26 in 1962-63 and because the style is from that year, we believe this shirt was recycled to be worn by him in 1963-64. The only player to wear number 2 before Lappy was the great Doug Harvey. No one wore the number in between the two. Wonderful old wool worn by a brilliant defenceman. Jersey was obtained from a different source and will come with an LOA.
