It was a monumental, never-before-accomplished feat when Maurice Rocket Richard founded the NHL’s 500-goal club in 1957, the historic goal coming at the Forum against Chicago’s Glenn Hall. Two similar pucks here feature an image of the goal-scoring hero and his facsimile autograph on the front, with a December 29, 1955 date on the back and a scripted “Official” on the side. Research shows that these pucks actually commemorate the Rocket’s regular season and playoffs combined 500th goal, scored against Toronto’s Harry Lumley. Meanwhile, the same type of “Official” puck was used to produce a commemorative puck by Dow Breweries where Richard worked as a sales representative. Most impressive though is a near mint condition Art Ross Tyer puck from the 1940s with an octagonal orange rubber logo. A paper label features an albeit faded Richard autograph and is from Dow’s annual convention in Quebec in 1957 and would have been done up after the historic 500th regular season goal against Hall. Four intriguing must-haves for Rocket collectors!
