Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
The 4th overall pick of the 1973 NHL Amatuer Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and the 10th overall pick by the Cleveland Crusaders of the World Hockey Association in the same summer, Lanny McDonald, graduating from the WCHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, would go the route of the National Hockey League, playing a total of 1111 games over the course of 16-years with Toronto, Colorado and Calgary, winning a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. Having represented Canada internationally both on the ice and in management, McDonald would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992 and currently serves as chairperson of the Hall as well. Offered here, we present this photo-matched helmet worn by McDonald as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the era of the mid-to-late-1970s. A Lange/Northland made bucket in a deep blue colour that is void of any graphics or decals other than McDonald's number "7" in white over the lower reverse below an area of black. Remaining complete with the entirety of the strapping harness and padding still present on the interior, both CSA and model stickers are found on the interior and aged cream cloth tape now holds one strap in place but this was probably added after the lid saw NHL game use. Displaying with excellent use both inside and out via numerous scratches, marks and other abrasions and sweat staining on the interior, the piece was shown to McDonald many years ago at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, where he signed it and confirmed it as one of his game-worn examples with the blue and white. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
