Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Originally drafted 65th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Kris Letang has spent his entire National Hockey League career with the franchise that first called out his name, suiting up in nearly 1100 games over the course of 18-years as of this writing. A three-time Stanley Cup champion (2009, 2016 and 2017) who has also represented Canada internationally, winning back-to-back gold medals at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in 2006 and 2007, offered here is this collection of equipment used by Letang that includes three (3) pairs of gloves and a helmet.
Starting with the helmet, a white Bauer made BHH7500 model offering worn on the road in Pittsburgh's January 6th, 2011 contest against the Montreal Canadiens, a Bauer logo is seen over the front along with decals for Letang's number "58" appearing over the reverse as well. Featuring an Oakley visor affixed over the front of the piece, matching Penguins decals are in place over both sides of the helmet while an NHL shield sticker is in place over the lower right. Signed by Letang over the top with a blue marker ink signature that displays with some wear and scratches, the helmet, complete with all the padding and strapping harness, it is worth noting that the padding came loose from the interior at some point and has been put back in place but some adhesive residue is found in areas over the exterior. Having had "1-6-11 - #58 - @ Montreal" penned to the interior in silver marker ink, the helmet shows evidence of game-wear via a number of small scuffs and abrasions throughout the exterior and has been photo-matched with Getty Image #107913992 (January 6th, 2011 vs Montreal) to the missing section of the Oakley logo on the side of the visor. Additionally, a microfiber cloth bag will accompany to house the helmet that has a Penguins logo screened over the front above a sewn on leather patch that has had Letang's number "58" embroidered into it. Of note, some of the padding adhesive is spread throughout the interior of the bag and worth noting for accuracy and an LOA from Double Deke Hockey will be included as well.
For the first set of gloves, worn by Letang during the 2010-11 season of play, the black, vegas gold and white coloured mitts are Easton Pro model examples that have both had "Letang 58" embroidered into the cuff over each wrist. Both also having had "2010/2011 3." penned to the interior in black marker ink, Easton logo patches have been sewn on over the upper portion of both thumbs and "Easton" is spelt out in white letters across both wrists. Both showing heavy sweat staining to the insides and palms, the latter of which also display with holes and rubbing over both, the gloves also show additional wear via stick marks, frays, marks and other abrasions. Additionally, they have been photo-matched with Getty Image #106798823 (November 12th, 2010 vs Tampa Bay) to the stick mark in the "S" of "Easton" and the long black thread coming off the left glove.
For the second set of gloves, a navy blue pair worn when the Winter Classic style throwback jerseys were donned by the Penguins circa the 2010-11 season, the Easton Pro model mitts have both had "Letang 58" embroidered into the cuff over each wrist. Void of any penned notations, Easton logo patches have been sewn on over the upper portion of both thumbs and "Easton" is spelt out in white letters across both wrists. Showing no obvious signs of wear and remaining extremely clean, the palms both show no rubbing and remain free of any holes or frays, a condition that is seen on the outside of both gloves as well.
For the third set of gloves, a pair of Warrior AX1 model offerings in a simple black and white colourway, "Legend" is embroidered into the cuff of each wrist while "Warrior" is screened over both cuffs. Having had Warrior logo patches sewn over top of both thumbs, the mitts date to circa the 2015-16 season when Pittsburgh won their fourth (4th) Stanley Cup in franchise history. Both showing heavy sweat staining to the insides and palms, the latter of which also display with holes and/or rubbing over both, the gloves also show additional wear via stick marks, soiling, frays, marks and other abrasions.
Finally, the lot is rounded out with a black Penguins game sock that shows use and numerous team repairs that has been signed by Letang with a black marker ink signature and a trio of Penguins laundry bags that were issued for use by Letang. All made of mesh and either yellow, grey or blue in colour, all are made of a lightweight mesh construction, all have patches sewn over their fronts that show Letang's number "58" as well as a Penguins logo and show signs of having been used and washed multiple times. Of note, it is not clear if the signed sock of one worn by Letang or by someone else on the Penguins as there are no identifiers on the piece.
