Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Known by his nicknames "K-Mart" and "The Old Bear", Kevin Martin has won pretty much all one can in the sport of curling including an Olympic gold medal on home soil in 2010, a world champion in 2008 and multiple Brier's, the annual Canadian men's curling championship. The record holder for most victories at the Winter Olympic Games with twenty (20), Martin served as a major influence in the development of the sport of curling, establishing the competitive tier in the sport and setting the groundwork for the management of curling teams and the creation of high-level competitive curling events. Named the greatest Canadian male skip in the country's curling history in a 2019 poll by TSN, offered here is this jacket worn by Martin while serving as Team Alberta's skip at Canada's national curling championship, the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier as well as the 2013 Alberta Boston Pizza Cup Trophy presented to Martin after winning Alberta's provincial curling championship, earning him the right to represent the province at the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier.
Starting with the jacket, a yellow and blue coloured zip-up offering made by Mondetta, a brand label displaying a size "XL" designation has been heat-pressed on inside the collar while "Mondetta" appears over the right shoulder and reverse neckline as well. Displaying a 2013 Tim Hortons Brier event patch over the right breast with an additional one over the right sleeve, a Monsanto sponsorship patch is found over the left sleeve also. Decorated over the reverse with a stunning "Alberta" patch that features heavily embroidered details, "Martin" has been embroidered into the upper reverse with white letters that have been done in a gentle arch. Remaining in overall excellent condition with no major flaws and just light signs of wear via a few small marks throughout, all the zippers work perfectly also. Of note, the outline and a bit of residue from the now removed "2013 Canadian National Curling Championships" patch is observed over the left breast.
Also included with the lot is Martin's 2013 Alberta Boston Pizza Cup Trophy. Having been been broken between the top and base, the main portion of the award shows a laser engraved Alberta Curling Federation logo as well as "Alberta Boston Pizza Cup" while "2013" appears at the top of the right side. Measuring 9" tall at its highest points when including the frosted glass base which the top portion sits in perfectly fine, the base shows some marks throughout its entirety while the top portion has a pair of small chips at the top of the reverse as well as a few random marks/scratches throughout while also missing some of the colouring over the insert at the bottom that goes into the base that occurred when it was broken. Both hailing from Martin's personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany the lot.
