Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Finishing ahead of second-place Boston by a solid 15 points, the Detroit Red Wings concluded the 2001-02 NHL season as President’s Trophy winners, and defeated first-time finalist Carolina soundly in five games to claim the franchise’s 10th Stanley Cup championship. The team is also recognized as one of the greatest in history, featuring 11 future HOFers including Scotty Bowman. Enjoying a long relationship with Motown that included winning a pair of Stanley Cups as a player, Joey Kocur served as video coach with the club in 2001-02 and was presented this President’s Trophy for the Detroit Red Wings status as NHL champions. At 16” in height, a striking miniature President's Trophy in silver plate stands upon a three-tier wooden base, with three hockey sticks mounted over three silver columns helping to support a shallow, removable bowl. An engraved plaque naming the trophy along with “Joey Kocur” and “Detroit Red Wings – 2001-02” is affixed over the front, with a decal from maker Boffey on the brown felt underside. Sporting an even coat of tarnishing throughout with the trophy slightly loose on the base, there is a bit of surface residue on the lower section just above the base and to the rim of the bowl. We should also note that when we sold this trophy in 2021, the top section of crossed hockey sticks that holds the removable bowl was bent, with the bowl sitting askew. This has now been rectified, with the bowl sitting level, but as a result, some of the surface has chipped away on one of the sticks. This is very minor, mentioned for accuracy as it does not interfere with the display value of the trophy whatsoever. Originating from Joey Kocur’s personal collection, an LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
