Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Winners of the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1995, the OHL's Detroit Junior Red Wings – backstopped by Jason Saal – advanced to the Memorial Cup Final that same season. We have an attractive goalie mask that was worn by Saal during his tenure with the Junior Red Wings, circa 1993-95. In solid white with red graphics and cage, the original interior padding and strapping remains intact, with a sticker added along the top of the interior exhibiting a signature along with a handwritten date of “6-30-93”. Styled with well-executed winged-wheel Red Wings logos on each side above and below, “30” has been placed over the chin section in red, along with “Saal” over the backplate. With considerable wear present, the mask is ready for prominent display.
A number of scratches, marks and surface abrasions are present, with some red paint transfer along each side, with very heavy chipping over the forehead and chin sections. There is also some very minor soiling to the chin padding, with chips and flaking to the red finish applied to the cage. We should note that the 1995-96 Slapshot Memorial Cup hockey card #90 of Saal (from 1994-95 Memorial Cup) is showing the chips on the chin, but the image is not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match.
