Noted by Oilers' director of personnel Barry Fraser as "by far our most complete player", Juri Kurri signed with Edmonton in 1980 and enjoyed eight seasons playing alongside the greatest in the game, with the Gretzky/Kurri combination serving as the most prolific scoring duo of the 1980s. The original Finnish Flash would earn the Lady Byng, five Stanley Cup championships and seven All-Star Game selections all while wearing an Oilers jersey, with his #17 retired by the club in 2001. The Hall of Fame would also come calling that year, with Kurri enshrined as an honoured member.
Originating from the 1986-87 Stanley Cup championship season, one that witnessed Kurri score the Stanley Cup winning goal in Game 7, we offer a highly desirable Oilers jersey worn by the superstar during the regular season, playoffs and Stanley Cup finals – photo-matched to the finals! A Nike label with “L” sizing is affixed to the collar, with a screened Nike logo over the reverse hem. Styled with the familiar oil drop team crest, “17” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with “Kurri” across the affixed nameplate in matching material. The jersey also sports an intact loop-style fight strap along with custom-shortened sleeves. It should also be noted that all Oilers jerseys from this era had the nameplates removed with the jerseys recycled for the following preseason, with the current vintage-era team nameplate reattached to the jersey with no additional signs of nameplate removal.
Exhibiting thorough game-use with numerous desirable team repairs, a few puck and stick marks are visible over the front and sleeves, with burns and paint transfer marks on each sleeve. There is also pilling to the interior along with the approx 21 team repairs, with specimens situated on the front, reverse and sleeves, with each sleeve number also showing a small repair. An included numeric image of Kurri and Tikkanen lifting the Stanley Cup has been matched to a pair of black marks on the right sleeve (interior arm in air), with the proper alignment of the blue and orange striping bands matching. This image is also showing the team repair going over the lower blue stripe on the left sleeve (interior arm in air) and the proper alignment of the blue and orange stripes, while Getty Images # 56898046 and #102727433 (Stanley Cup finals Game 7 May 31, 1987) also show the the aforementioned matches. An additional numeric image of Kurri in Stanley Cup action versus the Flyers has been matched to the white paint transfer marks on the lower left sleeve, and to a pair of black marks/repairs in the white stripe just above the aforementioned white paint transfer marks, while the final included numeric image of Kurri behind the Flyers’ net celebrating an Edmonton goal in the Stanley Cup Finals has been matched to some of the black marks on the right sleeve (interior – arms lifted up in the air).
Worn by one of the greatest all-time European players during the most triumphant era of the Edmonton Oilers and photo-matched to the 1987 Stanley Cup finals, this jersey serves as one of the best Juri Kurri specimens in the hobby. Hailing from the Michael Wexler collection, an LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
