First gaining professional experience in his native Finland with Jokerit, Jari Kurri made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers in 1980-81 and would go on to play a total of 754 games in an Oilers uniform, helping the club to five (5) Stanley Cup championships during their dynasty decade of the 1980's and becoming the second highest scoring Oiler of all-time as of this writing, posting 1043 points and trailing only Wayne Gretzky. Playing in a total of nine (9) National Hockey League All-Star Games over the course of his career and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 and originally purchased directly from owner Peter Pocklington as part of the 1,018 Edmonton jersey collection spanning from 1979 to 1996, proudly offered here, we present this Edmonton Oilers jersey worn by Kurri during the 1982-83 regular season and playoffs, including the 1983 Stanley Cup Finals against the New York Islanders.
A mesh constriction garment made by a company called Athletic Supply that sports Nike branding screened-on over the reverse hem, a small white size "L" fly tag is affixed to the inner collar. Decorated over the front with a familiar Oilers team crest in flight satin twill that also features embroidered details as well, the Universiade '83 patch, an event hosted by the City of Edmonton that year, is sewn on top of the right shoulder. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Kurri's now retired number "17" in stacked tri-layer flight satin twill numerals with the white coloured layer embroidered, "Kurri" is spelt out in single layer blue flight satin letters across the affixed matching mesh nameplate that runs from shoulder-to-shoulder across the upper reverse.
Utilizing a loop style fight strap on the interior, the jersey exhibits heavy examples of game-wear with no fewer than approximately eighteen (18) fabric backed team repairs found throughout the body and sleeves, including a large cluster above the bottom blue stripe just above the Nike logo on the reverse. Sporting additional battle scars via a plethora of stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves, board paint transfer marks over the reverse and both sleeves and board burns over both sleeves, it is also worth mentioning that staining not necessarily from game-wear is present on the right sleeve and reverse though some general soiling and sweat staining is seen throughout as well from repeated use and age. Additionally, some pilling is felt and seen on the interior.
Regarding the aforementioned photo-matches, the jersey is matched to an included numerical image of Kurri taken during the regular season that is matched to numerous stick marks over the left sleeve, right shoulder, lower front and around the team crest plus the off-center placement of the oil drip at the top of the crest while an additional regular season image from the year is matched to the uneven blue stripe above the Nike logo on the reverse that has occurred as a result of the large team repair in that area. Additionally, a third image, albeit of lower resolution, shows a clear match to the dark stick mark directly underneath the Oilers crest on the front. For the Stanley Cup Finals, the jersey has been video-matched to footage from the 3rd period Game 1 that shows the dark mark at the right shoulder as well as to video footage from the 3rd period of Game 2, specifically Glenn Anderson's goal, that shows the dark stick mark at the right elbow.
An Oilers LOA listing the original date of sale as well as the MeiGray registration number of "102530" and details of the jersey will accompany the piece along with an additional one pertaining to the Wexler Collection itself.
Addendum; The jersey had a few stains on it not originating from game wear and which occurred long after Kurri wore it, these stains were on the nameplate and on the right sleeve and have been cleaned. New photos of the jersey have been taken and posted on this listing.
