Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Perhaps the most important man to ever serve as a goaltender in the National Hockey League, Jacques Plante would lead the Montreal Canadiens to a total of six (6) Stanley Cup championships and win seven (7) Vezina Trophy's also. Awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1962 and also enjoying NHL service time with the likes of the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins as well as a year in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers, Plante was the first NHL goaltender to wear a goaltender mask in regulation play on a regular basis. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978, offered here is this Sher-Wood stick used by Plante as a member of the Maple Leafs circa-1971. A Sher-Wood Pattern Pro model twig with "Plante" stamped to the upper shaft, the stick retains its original white-over-black tape job around the knob with black wrapped around the top of the paddle plus heel and entirety of the blade. Dated to circa-1971 based on the presence of the "Adirondack-Sherwood" stamp over one side of the upper shaft and the small size of the "Sher-Wood" stamping, the stick shows use via a number of marks and abrasions throughout the entirety of the stick including puck marks over the paddle and red post paint transfer marks over the reverse side of the upper shaft, it should also be mentioned that a very faint pencil signature of an unknown person appears near the bottom of the shaft on the forehand side. Additionally, it needs to be pointed out that we could not locate a photo of Plante using a Sher-Wood stick in game with the Leafs and is the reason why we have listed it as "used" but not "game-used".
