Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Awesome grouping of autographs from deceased HOFers such as Turk Broda, Syl Apps, Gordie Drillon, Harry Watson, Bill Quackenbush, Syd Howe, Harry Lumley and original Red Wings owner James Norris Sr. are featured in this lot of signed items from the legendary Jack Adams’ personal collection. James E. Norris has signed in black fountain pen ink his typewritten two-page letter to Adams, with fascinating hockey content, written in the midst of the 1933-34 season! Broda has signed each of two team-signed 1939-40 Maple Leafs mini sticks that have 11 and 15 Leafs signatures, respectively. Members of the 1945-46 Red Wings have signed on two autograph booklet sheets.
Norris used his Norris Grain Company letterhead to write his letter dated December 18, 1933 addressed to Jack Adams at New York’s Hotel Victoria. He wrote his letter to Adams in the wake of the Red Wings’ 4-4 tie against the New York Americans at the Olympia the night before (Dec. 17) following a 4-0 loss to the Black Hawks at Chicago Stadium on Dec. 14. The Red Wings responded with a 1-0 win against the Americans at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19, but lost their next three games.
Two (2) 1939-40 Maple Leafs team-signed mini sticks with fountain pen autographs in a variety of inks:
Signed (15) by Turk Broda, Gordie Drillon, Syl Apps, Bob Davidson, Red Heron, Murph Chamberlain, Pete Langelle, Pep Kelly, Gus Marker, Lex Chisholm, Wally Stanowksi, Bucko McDonald, Jack Church, Reg Hamilton and Phil Stein, plus about 15 minor leaguers on the other side of the stick;
Signed by (11) with water damage, Turk Broda, Bob Davidson, Red Heron, Murph Chamberlain, Pete Langelle, Pep Kelly, Bingo Kampman, Wally Stanowksi, Bucko McDonald, Jack Church and Reg Hamilton; plus 12 legible minor leagues on the other side of the shaft, including one “George Imlach”. (Punch Imlach played for the 1939-40 Toronto Goodyears, who lost their 1940 Allan Cup Eastern Canada playoff series to Kirkland Lake);
Flash Hollett, Murray Armstrong, Eddy Bruneteau, Mud Bruneteau, Joe Carveth, Hal Jackson, Harry Lumley, Bill Quackenbush, Harry Watson, Adam Brown and Carl Liscombe have signed in black fountain pen ink on one autograph sheet with “Detroit Red Wings 1945-46” handwritten on the lower right in small blue ballpoint ink letters. The second autograph sheet is signed by five with Syd Howe in black ink, Gerry Couture in blue ink, and Floyd Perras (minor league goalie), Doug McCaig and Ray Rossignol in black ink.
Included is the autograph booklet from which the pages were removed with otherwise blank autograph pages.
