Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

The only player in history to hit 150 home runs from both sides of the plate, Mickey Mantle remains one of the greatest players of all-time and arguably the most collected, with his 1952 Topps card the king of the post war hobby. Commanding considerable realty and matching the colossal status of the man himself, we have a large original framed painting on canvas of The Commerce Comet by especially noted artist Robert Stephen Simon. Breathtaking at an immense 36” x 47” and framed to approx 43 ½” x 55”, The Mick is accurately depicted in full swing, resplendent in his Yankees pinstriped finery, with his famous “7” visible over the knob of his bat. The icon has added a large blue marker signature across his mid-image with “HOF 1974”, with no issues for the attractive scripting. The artist has signed over the bottom left, adding “1990”, with Mantle sadly leaving us in 1995. Please note that due to its especially large size, special shipping arrangements will be required.
The painting exhibits no issues, with moderate to heavier wear to the vintage gilt frame. Simon added “Mantle Solo” over the upper reverse along with his Flushing address in Queens.
Robert Stephen Simon won many prestigious awards, with his works in numerous noted collections including The White House collections of former Presidents George Bush and Barrack Obama. Simon considered many famous people among his friends including George Steinbrenner, Mickey Mantle and Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Mr. Simon passed away in 2014.
