Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
One of the oldest and most renowned college hockey programs in the United States, the Harvard Crimson played their first game on January 19, 1898, in a 0–6 loss to Brown. NCAA Frozen Four finalists thirteen times, the Crimson were Conference Tournament championships as recent as 2022. Reaching back to early in the team's history, we offer an exceedingly rare puck used in a 3-0 victory over Princeton played at Boston Arena on January 15, 1916. Finishing in first place in their conference in 1915-16, Harvard competed in the Intercollegiate Hockey League, which was an agreement between the Crimson, Yale and Princeton to play a best-of-three series, which Harvard also won to claim their second consecutive intercollegiate championship. This puck produced by early sporting good giants Brine - the Harvard athletic supplier for many years, with their original store in Harvard Square - has been painted in solid Crimson, with the Brine "Intercollegiate Puck" logo embossed on one side, and "H-3 P-0" in antique white paint on the other. A check of the Harvard hockey results show that January 15, 1916 was the only time during the era that the Crimson beat Princeton 3-0 at home in intercollegiate play. The early puck shows crazing to the paint throughout, along with a few small chips and dings from game-use. There is also some paper residue over the Brine logo, as there was most likely paper glued to the puck with information handwritten. A rarity alone for puck collectors as Brine models are extremely rare, this historic Ivy League memento featuring two of the most prominent colleges in the United States is museum worthy.
