Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Acquired by the St Louis Blues on November 29th 1967 during the club’s inaugural NHL season, Red Berenson would spend 8 seasons in the Gateway to the West, captaining the squad in 1970-71 and again in 1977-78. We have a Blues away jersey worn by the star during the club’s first NHL season, in 1967-68. Most likely the first jersey he wore for St. Louis, Rawlings size “46” labeling sits affixed to the inside hem, along with a laundering tag. Featuring a layered tri-colour blue note team crest fully administered in tackle twill, the solid white durene has been accented with “7” over the sleeves and verso in matching material. It should be noted that the collar tagging and square shoulders date the garment to the inaugural season, with this first set of jerseys having Rawlings tagging over a shorter white hem, as opposed to the examples worn in the Stanley Cup Finals which had a longer white hem. A signed LOA from Red Berenson will accompany.
A few large stick marks and blood stains are present over the lower front and left sleeve, with additional marks over the right sleeve. Blood stains are also visible over the lower reverse, near a small team repair. Getty Image #81446983 from January 14th 1968 shows a number of black marks on the lower left sleeve which are located in the same area as the offered jersey, but unfortunately the photo is not high resolution enough to call a definitive photo-match.
