Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
The last of the six new clubs to join the NHL during the league’s original expansion in 1967, the St Louis Blues were anchored by a few veterans and stars, including HOFers Glenn Hall, Dickie Moore and Al Arbour, along with Ron Stewart, Noel Picard, Rod Seiling and inaugural-season points and goals leader, Red Berenson. Hailing from his personal collection and the first of its kind offered, we have a St Louis Blues jersey that was worn that very first inaugural season by Red Berenson, during the 1968 Stanley Cup finals! Wilson labeling along with a Giesler-Jorgen Sporting Goods tag remain affixed to the collar, with the vintage sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 48. Featuring a layered tri-colour blue note team crest fully administered in tackle twill, the solid blue durene has been accented with “7” over the sleeves and verso in matching material. It should be noted that the collar tagging and square shoulders date the garment to the inaugural season, with the first set of jerseys having Rawlings tagging over a shorter white hem, as opposed to the examples worn in the Stanley Cup Finals which had a longer white hem, confirmed with video footage and images of the 1968 Stanley Cup Finals. There is also evidence of the removal of the alternate’s “A” over the left breast, with a few stitch holes and a repair. Surviving in wonderful overall condition, this vintage specimen is to our knowledge the first ever 1968 Blues Stanley Cup Finals home jersey to ever be offered at auction. A signed LOA from Red Berenson will accompany.
Additional team repairs are visible just above the lower front band, over each elbow and near the left shoulder, with a few small stains over the right sleeve’s striping band and beneath the reverse neckline.
