One of the rare NHL players – like Charlie Gardiner - to have been born in the United Kingdom just after the turn of the century, Gord Pettinger appeared for a pair of seasons in the old Canadian-American Hockey League with the Bronx Tigers and Springfield Indians respectively, before making his NHL debut with the Blueshirts in Manhattan in 1932-33. Parts of five seasons were then spent in Motor City with the Detroit Red Wings before making his way east to join the big bad Boston Bruins in 1937-38, seeing action in Beantown for a trio of seasons, until 1939-40. A three-time Stanley Cup champion, first with the New York Rangers in 1933, followed by back-to-back titles with the Red Wings in 1936 and 1937, and finally, with Boston, in 1939, Pettinger remains one of only eleven players in history to have won Lord Stanley’s coveted grail with three or more clubs. We have an exceedingly rare and desirable Boston Bruins wool sweater worn by Pettinger, with this scarce style only seeing NHL action from circa 1936 to 1939. A label from notable Boston maker Horace Partridge is affixed to the inside hem, with a “42” size tag attached adjacently. Styled with matching thick black-over-gold felt letters affixed to both the front and verso, Bruins’ “B” team crests grace each upper sleeve in matching material. Gold and black striping bands have also been utilized over the sleeves and waist, along with a black shoulder bar and gold collar.
With the number #11 previously worn by Jack "Red" Beattie in 1936-37, we should note that Pettinger saw action in 35 regular season games with Boston in 1936-37, 48 in 1937-38, and 21 games during his final season, in 1938-39. Surviving in especially gorgeous condition with rich and vibrant colouration throughout, the numbers and crests all remain firmly affixed, with all material remaining soft and supple. Just a couple small stains are present over the front, with a few additional marks/stains near each cuff. Small holes are also visible beneath the front left shoulder, over the upper left sleeve and within the right armpit, with team repairs on the upper left sleeve as well as the reverse (4).
