Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

One of the NHL’s most rabid fan bases, the Winnipeg Jets have always been blessed with unquestioned support in the River City, with items from earlier-on in the franchise always on the radar of collectors. We have an especially important item from the club, with a Winnipeg Jets jersey worn during the team’s first NHL season, in 1979-80. A clean Maska Superfil label sits affixed to the collar near a size “48 XL” tag, with an embroidered Maska logo over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with a wonderful Jets team crest with both “Winnipeg” and “Jets” embroidered, the vintage V-neck has been embellished with oversized white tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers with red trim, with the upper reverse currently void of a nameplate. Possibly worn by either Gerry Rioux or Don MacIver, both played most of the 1979-80 season for the CHL Tulsa Oilers, with Rioux seeing action in 8 Jets games, MacIver 6.
With evidence of two former nameplates once gracing the jersey, a tie-style “shoelace” fight strap has also been utilized. Game-wear includes a few washed-out marks over the front and sleeves, with some loose threading and fraying along the inside hem. There is also some pilling to the interior, mostly isolated near the team crest.
