Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Well remembered for his “stitches” goal mask; rated the greatest in the history of the game by The Hockey News in 2008, Gerry Cheevers enjoyed a lengthy and successful career after making his debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and dressed for both WHA and NHL clubs, most notably Boston. From the era of his return to the Bruins from the Cleveland Crusaders, we have a stick used by the 1985 HOF inductee in 1975-76. Cheevers would see his final 28 games with the Crusaders and leave the club after a financial dispute, and conclude the season with 15 regular-season games for the Bruins along with 6 playoff matches. A Northland Custom Pro model with “Cheevers” stamped to the upper shaft along with his “30” (in red), a production code of “0605” and a date stamp of “MAR 15 1976” have been placed adjacently. Sporting the original white-over-black tape on the knob, the blade tape is missing strands, with the remaining tape covered with clear tape during the period, with this now deteriorating somewhat. A period piece of white tape on the upper shaft has “Gerry Cheevers Boston Bruins April 1, 1976” handwritten, with the Bruins losing that evening to Buffalo. There are some age cracks at the toe of the blade, with general wear from use throughout including along the underside of the blade.
